In 2006, HBC Heritage Services purchased six chairs from a dealer in British Columbia. They had been acquired from the dealer’s friend at auction in Victoria, B.C. in 1996. There was relatively little information about the wood and leather chairs, which feature the Hudson’s Bay Company Coat of Arms embossed on the backrest. One hypothesis was that the chairs came from a boardroom in Quebec or Ontario.

Fast forward to 2015.  Recently an employee contacted Heritage Services for additional information about a photo of an old HBC store restaurant.  We thought something in the photo looked very familiar. And, after a bit of digging and photo reconnaissance, we discovered that the chairs shown in an HBCA 1918 photo of The Elizabethan Room restaurant in HBC’s downtown Calgary store are the same as the chairs in our collection! Another HBC mystery solved!
